The Last Poets - Right On!

Today's PSA is brought to you by Milk. Milk hit the world with another megapost - this time on The Last Poets and so now I have no excuse not to bust these facts. Awhile back I noticed when listening to Right On! that the first tracks were mislabelled on the CD. Below is the proper tracklisting for tracks one through seven. 8 through 18 were straight. Track #7 was the inspiration for the Jungle Brother's Black Woman from Done by the Forces of Nature. I'm kind of partial to the last track - #18. Since knowledge is infinite then on any given day street knowledge can be > book knowledge. You just have to know what day it is.

1. David Nelson/The Last Poets - Intro
2. Felipe Luciano/The Last Poets - Jibaro/My Pretty Nigger
3. Gylan Kain/The Last Poets - Been Done Already
4. Felipe Luciano/The Last Poets - Hey Now

Malcolm McLaren and the Bootzilla Orchestra - Waltz Darling 1989

Don't be fooled by the cover. It may not be a shit jazz cover, but it is certainly one of the worst I've seen in awhile. I prefer the second half over the first. Track 6 has that Barry White bassline that's been used countless times since '89; and the guest contributions include Bootsy (natch), N'Dea Davenport (one of her first!), Jeff Beck and Dave Stewart. The release brings back some memories of those who thought hip-hop needed more house music. It didn't really work out that way, now did it?

Bulworth 1998

So I went used CD shopping after some crate digging turned up nada. Found some great stuff for $2 a pop, but this just rates as ok since it's the clean version. Enjoy track #2 which samples the 1983 country/pop hit (#1 for the year) "Islands in the Stream". The rest of the tracks aren't just throwaways since this was supposed to be a serious, social commentary flick. I think the film fails on some levels due to a generation gap more than anything else and ends up as kind of your Grandpa's version of Dangerous Minds for politics. Don't front on the soundtrack, though.

1. Dr. Dre & LL Cool J - Zoom
2. Mya/Ol' DB/Pras - Ghetto Supastar That Is What You Are

The Big Gundown - Reggae Inspired by Spaghetti Westerns 2004

It so happens I never posted reggae here until this post. This has been the hottest summer since 1998 around here so I guess the time is right. Without Jamaica I couldn't be a hip-hop fanatic so it's nice to see the U.S. give something back by the way of the Italian Western. You know how ridiculous those hip-hop westerns looked compared to the superior urban warrior movies? Trust me, Jamaican artists didn't make the same mistake. Will a few understand what I'm talking about? Or is it just the 100F/38C days getting to me? It's a rhetorical question. Don't even try to answer. Do listen to some good songs about money, love and death backed by cool reggae.

Next School Settin' an Example 1990

I have this theory that LONS took some of the shine off this group's success or lack thereof. Just listen to the title track with the Lord Jamar sample and tell me LONS didn't take the concept behind Next School to the next level and then some. LONS imploded after the second LP but Next School only released one full-length before moving on. Remember to pay your tuition if you enroll in Funk University.

Winston Walls - Boss of the B-3 1993

You learn something new everyday so today let it be some B-3. From AMG - Long overdue (like about 30 years!) debut album for Walls who is, as one reviewer put it, "the best organ player you never heard of." You can hear him now in live concert with long-time friend and rival Jack McDuff. You guessed it. McDuff and Walls battle it out as in days of yore, note for note and screeching chord against chord. This is a classic jam battle with a few vocals thrown in for diversion. McDuff is bound to let Walls (after all these years) be heard, so he does not struggle too hard. Good funk fun - Recorded October 25 & 26, 1993.

Ed O.G. & the Bulldogs - Roxbury 02119 1994

The artists that rebound from sophomore slumps are persistent which does not always mean quality. Thankfully, Ed O.G. has always crafted some of the best hip-hop around with or without major label support and the resulting output is top quality hip-hop from Boston. This came out in early 1994 after label delays. Song 4 does work better in summer. Enjoy.

The Autobiography of Mistachuck 1996

I know a lot of people front on anything Public Enemy put out after 1991,but this release reminds me of when Jordan "retired" to play baseball. The record industry some battles vs. PE, but PE won the war. "No" is a personal favorite - seems inspired by Stakes Is High. Check it out. I couldn't post this without the Chuck D vs. Bill McNeal faceoff.

Cheers and Jeers May 24 2008

Jeers: To those who submit cheers to this page. Your cheering takes up space that could be used for more jeers. Cheers to those who submit jeers. It takes gumption and determination to chide others in this forum. You deserve to be recognized! I always skip the cheers and go straight to the jeers. They're fantastic!
